World crisis tends to bring change to society that sends ripples through it’s functional units. During World War Two, women were much more involved both in the military and in war work in factories. With this increase in demand for women in the workforce, children were granted more freedom. Social panic about the consequences of this increase perpetuated during this time period, and the new use of the word youth became common. Childhood and adulthood could now be differentiated with the term adolescence and youth, and this worried school officials. With men gone and women working, the ability of mothers to discipline their children came into question and the application of curfews and compulsory schooling arose. The concerns of this time period placed a growing importance on education, and during World War Two education became the method in which Canada was going to save the youth of the future.
