Canada is often stereotyped as the friendly country and accepts everyone and is often perpetuated throughout history as well. This of course is untrue, as the many negative events of Canadian history are constantly pushed to the side. The reality of segregated schooling in relation the Canadian past is one topic that is not thoroughly known or discussed. This weeks articles highlight the racism that was present in Canadian history and the consequences that arose from in relation to schooling. In the early 20th century, Chinese people received the bulk of racism. Caucasian males did not want Chinese boys in their schools, and Chinese people were forced to create their own schooling. They had no choice, as sometimes the racism became violent and they got no support from the Canadian government.
Another topic of Canadian history that is not widely discussed is the treatment of African-American families. Even when African families pleaded to the government and did everything in their power to advocate for their children’s education, they still were left with only sympathy and no actual support. This weeks reading sparked my interest as before these readings I had no idea the extent of the experiences of non-white races in Canada. It would have been nice to learn more about these experiences.
