The feminization of teaching is not a surprising reality when analyzing it with the idea of separate spheres in mind. In the early industrial period, the only work that women could do were jobs that was seen as an extension of their domestic roles. Of course, the emergence of women in teaching was a milestone in the lives of women as beforehand they were never seen in the professional field. Once women began to teach, they were faced with many obstacles as most women are when entering any kind of job. The opportunity of teaching gave young women the ability to receive some freedom and leave home. However, the women teaching in rural schools were often lonely and had to deal with unhappy parents who were very verbally abusive.
Struggles and conditions aside, the women who went into teaching took a big step forward for women. Eventually, women teachers received the title of a professional, which was a rare title for a woman to have during this time period.
