This weeks final readings really got me thinking about the education system in North America. I have come to realize how the education system sets some students up to fail and others to succeed. People learn in different ways, not everyone can sit down and listen to a teacher talk for hours on end, and some cannot sit down and focus long enough to take tests. However, this is the reality of our university systems. You have a teacher, they dictate what you learn, and you do not really get much of a say. Even with your desired career path, you have to go to school and take the degree you need to get you there, and even though you get some options with your courses, the majority of what you are learning is already chosen for you. There is not much flexibility in university education, you have a teacher and you have dates and deadlines. Just like in the work place, you have a job and you have a boss and you have responsibilities. This this in mind, I cannot quite understand how complete alternate schooling can be seen as beneficial. I understand the need to allow creativity in the classroom and give children the opportunity to guide their education, but as they go through their education they will not be able to have complete control over everything they learn. It is just not realistic, and I do not see the why we have to sugar coat everything when kids are young. Society needs rules in order to function, and they are so deeply embedded in everywhere that giving kids so much freedom at such a young age just seems ridiculous.
